Transportation systems need to meet the needs of people with a diverse range of physical, cognitive, intellectual, psychological and sensory abilities. This has led to the growing implementation of cycling infrastructure intended for use by people of all ages and abilities including children, seniors and people with disabilities. In response to a 2020 BC Human Rights Tribunal ruling that found the City of Victoria discriminated against people with sight loss with the design of island platform bus stops, TransLink, in partnership with the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTT), developed the Design Guide for Bus Stops Adjacent to Cycling Infrastructure. to provide province-wide design guidance for “island platform bus stops” or “floating bus stops” in British Columbia. The Design Guide was developed because was a lack of research or guidelines to address this topic in North America. The award-winning and first-of-its kind Design Guide was developed with significant engagement with people with disabilities - including innovative pilot projects to test possible treatments - and provides a comprehensive set of planning and engineering guidelines offering solutions for the planning, design, operation, and maintenance of bus stops adjacent to protected cycling infrastructure in a range of contexts and applications throughout British Columbia, along with guidance for education and engagement. This session will present key findings and lessons learned.
