The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has released the fifth edition of the Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities, which supersedes the fourth edition published in 2012. Developed by the AASHTO Committee on Design and the Technical Committee on Non-Motorized Transportation and based on extensive research, the latest edition of what is colloquially known as the ‘AASHTO Bike Guide’ provides the preeminent engineering design guidance on the physical infrastructure needed to support bicycling for travel and recreation in the United States.
The guide encourages a flexible approach to design bikeways and emphasizes the role of the planner, designer, and engineer in determining appropriate bikeway types and design dimensions based on project-specific conditions and existing and future performance.
