Innovative Applications of Pedestrian Crossing Guidance

Innovative Applications of Pedestrian Crossing Guidance

Presenters:
Carrie Modi, Fehr & Peers
Sarah O'Brien, UNC Highway Safety Research Center

This presentation introduces a NCDOT decision-making flowchart used as a crossing treatment evaluation tool. The FHWA’s STEP Guide reflects similarities to NCDOT’s process and provides additional consideration for countermeasure selection based on key safety issues to be addressed at a given crossing. Presenters will also share a proof-of-concept application of a Python-based tool that incorporates criteria from the STEP Guide to systemically assess 85 uncontrolled crossings in Pittsburg, CA and recommend design treatments.
